Dos Mundos, Una Vida

“I crossed the Mexican border. No words can describe the feelings during the crossing, the risk, the physical and mental effort that we undergo—to the extreme.

Getting to places that I never imagined, crossing long distances on foot many times, not eating for entire days, not sleeping at all, many mosquitoes biting you, crossing rivers in Mexico where we were told not to take our hands off the raft because there were crocodiles or lizards.

That gave me the strength to not put my children at risk, leaving them in Honduras and giving them the opportunity to study.”

“As time went by, I began to understand that my mother would never return, and the best thing would be for me to search for her. I was very scared because the people I lived with and those around me said that the trip from El Salvador to the United States was very dangerous and that many times people die in the attempt.

When I was 7 years old, I wanted to come [to the United States], and I told my mom that, and I was about to leave. But there was always something that made me lose my courage, and then [the thought] would pass.”
